booting up hard disk from white Macbook 2008 using newer Macbook as external drive

Hi,

My white Macbook bought in 2008 could not power on and i extracted the harddisk to try to boot up using my friend Macbook air as an external harddrive.

Pressed the Option key while booting up to start up using my harddisk. Managed to reached the Disk utility but I am not sure how to proceed further.

All i need is to retrieve my files from my hard disk without losing it and also not to accidently delete or reformat my friend's files as well.

Appreciate if someone could help me out with this. Thanks!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

1) Basically I used a USB SATA/IDE cable set as shown below to connect my extracted harddisk to my friend's Macbook air.

2) while Macbook Air is starting up, i pressed the OPTION key to go to the screen below, chose the Recovery HD as that was my harddisk.

3) Came to this OS X Utilities screen, as I was using my friend laptop, I assume that I could not restore from Time Machine Backup ( I did not do any backup before anyway). Not sure what will happen if I reinstall OS X as i am afraid I might lose any important data which I need to retrieve badly. Therefore I select the Disk Utility.

4) Once im in this screen, I am unsure how to proceed, whether to go to First Aid, Erase RAID or Restore.

The reason why I am doing these steps is that my macbook could not power on, therefore I have no access to my files.

I want to retrieve all my important files ( Documents, Photos etc) without affecting anything from the Macbook Air, and at the same time have a chance to extract my files to back up to one of my external hard drives.

If there are any other methods of extracting my files from my hard disk, kindly share in this thread as well. Thanks!

* Kindly take note that all the pictures were taken from the internet for anyone to have a better visualization on the steps i had tried to take.
